17 Ιαν 2024 · To test iodine levels at home, use a colored (brown) iodine solution, often called poviden iodine. Apply a small amount on the skin, forearm, or abdomen in about a two-inch square area. Leave it on for 24 hours and observe whether and how fast it is absorbed.

You can try a preliminary test for yourself at home using the iodine patch test, but for a conclusive diagnosis, you will likely need to get a blood or urine test as well as an assessment from a doctor.
Free iodine penetrates through the unbroken skin. Approximately 88% of the iodine evaporates from the skin within three days. Colloidal iodine evaporates somewhat more quickly than tincture of iodine; Lugol’s solution is more stable than either of them. The influence of ambient temperature on the evaporation of iodine is significant.

Lugol’s solution and other preparations containing iodide have for almost a century been used as an adjuvant treatment in patients with Graves’ disease planned for thyroidectomy. Iodide has been shown to decrease thyroid hormone levels and reduce blood flow within the thyroid gland.
Lugol's iodine solution is used to identify and determine the extent of squamous cell cancer, as lesions with low levels of glycogen (i.e. tumor cells) do not absorb the contrast material. Other stains which are used include methylene blue, acetic acid, and indigo carmine (see Ch. 2.4).
It has been suggested that Lugol's iodine be added to the water or that 1 to 2 ml of tincture of iodine be painted on the woolless skin once per week.
