Historically, Oklahoma was home to two main species of wolves: the gray wolf (Canis lupus) and the red wolf (Canis rufus). Gray Wolf (Canis lupus): These wolves were known for their adaptability, able to thrive in various habitats ranging from forests to prairies.
Nysa joined the W.O.L.F. family on January 29, 2017. She was approximately one year old. Nysa, whose name means “New Beginnings,” came from Freedom’s Song Wolf Rescue in Oklahoma. They gave her the beautiful name to mark the beginning of her new life. Nysa came from a breeder in Oklahoma.

In Oklahoma, wolves come in just two different species; the red and the gray wolves. In the 1930s, these types of wolves were exterminated due to bounty hunting in the state, wrecked bison populations, and decreased deer populations.

Because the Sanctuary is only licensed to provide thirty animals with a forever home at W.O.L.F., W.O.L.F.’s Rescue Coordinator administers a nationwide, electronic rescue network of wolf dog rescues, sanctuaries and qualified private placements.
