25 Ιουν 2018 · Catholics and Lutherans hold different views on Lenten observation. Catholics regard Lent as a compulsory time of fasting, penance and almsgiving in atonement of sin. Lutherans don't believe holy scripture mandates penance and sacrifice during Lent but they may voluntarily do so ahead of Easter.

On Ash Wednesday, as Lent begins, we are invited “to struggle against everything that leads us away from love of God and neighbor” by exercising the Discipline of Lent: repentance, fasting, prayer and works of love.
For Catholics, Lutherans, Moravians, Anglicans, United Protestants, and Lent-observing Methodists and Reformed Christians, the Lenten penitential season ends after the Easter Vigil Mass or Sunrise service.
Catholics have arguably the strictest rules for Lenten sacrifices. This includes the previously mentioned personal sacrifices, not eating meat on Fridays, fasting on the first and last day of Lent and performing the Stations of the Cross on Friday evenings. On the other hand, Lutherans aren’t required to make sacrifices during Lent.
