Unmarked Companion Quest: Lily’s quest is best to start when you have a speech of 80. This will allow you to get the best ending for ‘Guess Who I saw Today’, after that her unmarked quest will eventually start when traveling with her and battling with her.
All companions have a number of "history points" you need and a special requirement to do to trigger their quest. With Boone you get "history points" by working against the legion. Then talk to Manny Vargas about the NCR and bitter springs, then talk to Boone and there should be an option to talk about how his wife died.
