Titled Without Sanctuary: Lynching Photography in America, it was co-curated by James Allen and Julia Hotton with sixty-five images and augmented with material from the Historical Society’s collections to provide a fuller picture of the antilynching movement’s activities in New York.
Beginning with a discussion of the lynching photography gathered in James Allen’s Without Sanctuary: Lynching Photography in America, this essay goes on to consider the difficulties that African American writers confront in responding to the images that cast their people in the role of victims.
