A little bit more information: this conversion was conducted by the Arsenal de Bourges (ABS) in 1967. Despite France having acquired a rather considerable amount of M47 (856) in the 50s, the up-gunned variant was intended to try and reach foreign markets.
The M47 was a relatively short-lived MBT (then called "medium tank" created to replace the M46 Patton/M26 Pershing and the M4 Sherman). It was widely produced to fit the needs of the US Army, US Marines, but also NATO nations as a whole as a stopgap measure before new models could be built locally.
The M47 was the U.S. Army's and Marine Corps' primary tank, intended to replace the M26 Pershing and M46 Patton medium tanks. [note 1] The M47 was widely used by U.S. Cold War allies, both SEATO and NATO countries, and was the only Patton series tank that never saw combat while in US service.
