The continuing riots and protests at Spike Island prison in Cork Harbour. On the night of 31 August, prisoners set fire to a block in the prison, overpowered the officers and a riot ensued.
The riot led to the construction of formal 4 man prison cells in the ‘C’ class block, which remained in use until 2004 and can be seen by visitors today. Visitors can also see the ‘Riot exhibition’, which tells the story.

23 Σεπ 2021 · Dubbed 'Ireland's Alcatraz,' Spike Island was Europe's top tourist attraction in 2017 and a functioning prison up until 2004. A Formidable Fortress Spike Island was used by the British military as early as 1650 to confine political prisoners in the aftermath of the Cromwellian conquest.
Listened to it today. Really interesting story, I sort of remember it happening back in the day.
