The Land of Oz is a theme park based on L. Frank Baum 's Land of Oz books, located in the resort town of Beech Mountain, North Carolina, US. Carolina Caribbean Corporation opened it in 1970 under the guidance of Grover Robbins, who had been successful with Tweetsie Railroad. Designed by Jack Pentes, the park was fully operational until 1980.
The Land of Oz on top of Beech Mountain is SO well done, and everything from Dorothy’s house, Professor Marvel, the witch’s legs under the house, Glinda greeting everyone….seemed straight out of the movie!

Today, The Land of Oz opens seasonally for the annual Autumn at Oz festival. Learn the history of the original 1970’s Land of Oz as you skip down the Yellow Brick Road and visit some of the park’s main attractions like the Gale Kansas Farm, the Judy Garland Memorial Overlook and the tornado cellar.
Experience the magic of Oz during this three-weekend event where the Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, and Cowardly Lion are ready to perform for you on your journey to meet the Wizard! Keep a lookout for the Wicked Witch and her Winged Monkeys, plus other favorite characters from this classic story!
June 15, 1970. Soft Opening of Oz. The Land of Oz has a soft opening before the Emerald City or balloon ride are ready. An immediate hit, it draws 4,000 people, earning it the Washington Post’s title of Number One Tourist Attraction. Grand Opening of Oz. The official ribbon cutting ceremony with Debbie Reynolds takes place.
