TOTAL POPULATION TRENDS IN MAINE 1970-2020 Figure 1 on page 7 shows how Maine's population has grown during the 180 year period from 1790 to 1970. The figure is separated into two parts. Each part presents a different perspective of Maine's population as compared to United States and New England population growth.
Population growth is both a cause--and a consequence--of economic growth. Patterns of population growth and change reflect differences among regions to attract and retain people both as producers and consumers in their economy.
The Office of the State Economist has released population projections covering the state, counties, and cities and towns for 5-year intervals to 2040. For cities and towns, projections cover total population only; for the state and counties, projections include five-year age and sex cohorts.
