19 Ιουν 2017 · Woodchucks prefer open farmland and wooded or brushy areas near open land where their burrows are usually located. The burrows are noticeable by a large mound of excavated earth at the entrances. They often have two or more entrances some distance from the the main entrance.
Woodchucks damage garden vegetables and fruits, eat ornamental flowers, and debark trees. Their burrows can undermine foundations and fences and pose a hazard to equipment, animals, and people. They give birth in April and May with litters averaging four to five pups.
The groundhog (Marmota monax), also known as a woodchuck, is a rodent of the family Sciuridae, belonging to the group of large ground squirrels known as marmots. It was first scientifically described by Carl Linnaeus in 1758.
Ways to deal with nuisance woodchucks include: fences, predator scent (bobcat/coyote urine), harassing them (chasing, filling their burrows with rocks, to change the cost/benefit ratio of staying), moving compost heaps away from gardens. Female territory is around 0.75 acres, males around 1.5 acres.
