Sound is the most efficient means of communicating underwater, especially for many marine species. NOAA Fisheries works to better understand how marine animals use sound and the potential impacts of man-made noise on the underwater environment.
21 Αυγ 2018 · Understanding the ambient sound conditions in marine mammal habitats is important because ambient sound limits the detection of and likely response to man-made sound (see Larsen and Radford, Chap. 5). The ocean is naturally noisy.
Monitor ocean noise in geographically diverse areas with emphasis on marine mammal habitats; Develop quantitative relationships between man-made noise and levels of human activity; Conduct research on the distribution and characteristics of marine mammal sounds;
21 Αυγ 2018 · Although a few documents on marine mammal sound production and reception date back 200 years, concern about the effects of man-made noise on marine mammals has only been documented since...
21 Αυγ 2018 · Sounds naturally occurring in the environment include abiotic sounds, generated by wind or rain and by rivers or oceans, and biotic sounds, generated by all members of more or less noisy local animal communities.
1 Ιαν 2019 · Man-made noise has the potential to induce a stress response in marine fauna, defined here as “the physiological, hormonal, and behavioral changes that result from exposure to a stressor” (Wright et al., 2007).
7 Ιουν 2024 · A growing body of research shows that the anthropogenic cacophony drowning out the natural noises of the ocean can have major consequences for marine species.
