Exams. Over 80% of city government positions require you to take and pass a civil service exam. Standardized testing helps ensure the hiring and promotion processes are fair, competitive, and result in the City hiring the most qualified candidate for the job.
Exams. Your journey to a job in city government starts here – and it requires you to take a civil service exam. Your score can qualify you for current available job openings related to the exam. Click on the arrow below to find the exam you want to take, which will begin your registration process.
If you meet the basic requirements of the job, you can apply for your exam online or at one of our testing centers. Our testing centers are located in every borough and are open Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., except major holidays and scheduled closures.

The civil service exam schedule for the entire year is released annually every July, and is available in alphabetical order or in application period order. DCAS also releases a monthly exam schedule, which you can receive over email by subscribing to our NYC Jobs Newsletter.
