Following in the footsteps of pilgrims and pioneers, US‑20 takes in a little of everything during its two-lane trek from Oregon’s rugged coast to the glorious sea and sand of Cape Cod. In its 430-mile or so (690-km) trek across Nebraska, US-20 passes through a surprising variety of landscapes.
Traveling through Nebraska along the Oregon Trail pathways is an experience that echoes the footsteps of history. Spanning nearly 400 miles across the Great Plains region, this iconic route has witnessed countless migrations of pioneers, traders, and Native American tribes.
After the Vermillion River the trail angles northwest to Nebraska paralleling the Little Blue River until reaching the south side of the Platte River. Travel by wagon over the gently rolling Kansas countryside was usually unimpeded except where streams had cut steep banks.
