Location and map of the Sonora River. The Sonora River is located in the state of Sonora in northwestern Mexico. It rises south of Cananea, near the US border, and flows south and then southwest through the western flanks of the Sierra Madre Occidental.

Esta ruta serpentea a lo largo de casi 400 kilómetros desde la capital del estado, Hermosillo, hasta Cananea, atravesando lugares como Ures, Mazocahui, Baviácora, Aconchi, Huépac, Banámichi, Arizpe y finalmente Cananea, reconocida por su legado minero y su vibrante comunidad.
The Rio Sonora route is along a highway that passes through traditional pueblos along the Rio Sonora (Sonora River) in the north-central part of Sonora. The city of Cananea marks the northern point of the Rio Sonora, which continues south on Sonora highway 89 to the town of Baviácora and on to Ures.
The route outlined on tourist maps provided by the state of Sonora includes 8 towns. Most are small (some little more than a village) whereas Ures is a small to mid-size city. You may also wish to take some time to visit the nearby town of Moctezuma (near Ures).
