In this review, we highlighted the differences between these two syndromes by reviewing the data comparing kwashiorkor and marasmus in literature, combined with recent microbiological findings and meta-analysis.
Kwashiorkor is marked by an array of metabolic disturbances of uncertain etiology. In contrast, marasmus is more clearly a syndrome of energy deficiency, which is marked by weight loss. On physical exam, kwashiorkor is also distinguished from marasmus by the presence of edema.
