15 Οκτ 2024 · Climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution are degrading blue ecosystems, harming marine life, undermining the livelihoods of coastal communities, and negatively impacting health and well-being. Coastal regions, home to 40% of the global population and 12 of the world's 15 largest cities, face unique challenges.
Coral reefs are the most biodiverse ecosystem in our ocean. They occur in more than 100 countries and territories, and whilst they cover less than 1 per cent of the seafloor, they support at least 25 per cent of marine species – harbouring the highest biodiversity of any ecosystem globally and making them one of the most valuable ecosystems ...
3 ημέρες πριν · Marine ecosystems are aquatic environments with high levels of dissolved salt. These include the open ocean, the deep-sea ocean, and coastal marine ecosystems, each of which has different physical and biological characteristics.
This chapter assesses the impact of climate change on the full spectrum of ocean and coastal ecosystems, on their services and on related human activities, and it assesses marine-related opportunities within both ecological and social systems to adapt to climate change.
21 Νοε 2018 · Marine and coastal ecosystems are the largest carbon sink in the world and a vital source of livelihood, employment, nutrition and economic growth in cities and islands. Yet, the capacity of these ecosystems to balance our climate, protect our coastlines, and sustain human development is acutely threatened.
