§ 151.57 Garbage management plans. ( a ) The master or person in charge of a ship to which this section applies shall ensure that the ship is not operated unless a garbage management plan meeting paragraph (b) of this section is on the ship and that each person handling garbage follows the plan.
Title 33 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 151.57 requires all oceangoing vessels 40 feet or more in length used in commerce or equipped with a galley and berthing to have a written waste management plan.

Waste Management Plan. Boats 40 ft and longer must have a written waste management plan, stating how you deal with the collected waste onboard, who handles it, and where it is disposed. This can be as short as one paragraph. We recommend that you keep your plan in your onboard ships papers.
33 CFR Parts 151 MSM, Vol. II Annex V applies to ship-generated garbage, and aims to reduce the amount of garbage - both plastics and other persistent wastes - that ships dump into the oceans.
