1. (Mark 6:14-16) Herod hears of Jesus’ ministry and is perplexed. Now King Herod heard of Him, for His name had become well known. And he said, “John the Baptist is risen from the dead, and therefore these powers are at work in him.” Others said, “It is Elijah.” And others said, “It is the Prophet, or like one of the prophets.”
15 Ιουλ 2012 · Mark chose this opportunity, after Jesus sent out his disciples on their first formal mission, to report the death of John the Baptist. Mark hinted at this political death earlier in the story when John was arrested (1:14), but saved the full report until chapter 6.
16 Μαΐ 2023 · James Rosscup - A noted scholar has an apt comment beginning his Introduction, that a commentary should be on the biblical book, not about commentaries on Mark (1), issues in Mark and not all the issues scholars can raise.
Note, (1.) We know not Christ till he is pleased to reveal himself to us. "It is I; I your Master, I your friend, I your Redeemer and Saviour. It is I, that came to a troublesome earth, and now to a tempestuous sea, to look after you." (2.)
Isaiah is tried before the king, found guilty, and sawed in two with a wood saw. In the story of the prophet Jeremiah, Jeremiah was nearly killed. He was thrown into a cistern and only rescued at the last moment. Elijah was involved in a life-and-death struggle with Jezebel, the wife of King Ahab.
5 Ιουλ 2021 · Until then, Mark never wants people to run ahead or assume anything resembling a triumphalist air. We have to follow Jesus all the way to Golgotha if we are really going to understand who he is and what the gospel brings. So maybe Mark is tempering things a bit by inserting this sad reminder of sin, evil, and death.
