The front of the car was torn away, leaving Donohue, still strapped to his safety seat, with his legs dangling outside the car. Amazingly, Donohue only suffered an internal derangement of his knee with meniscus damage and limited cruciate plus collateral ligament damage.
Mark Donohue (USA) Penske Racing Cars March 751, suffered a massive crash following a tyre failure at the Hella Licht Curve during practice. Although initially conscious, Donohue tragically died on the Tuesday following the race with a brain haemorrhage, and a marshal was killed too at the scene of the accident.
His heirs contended the crash was caused by a tyre failure, and a law-suit was brought against Goodyear, resulting in a $12 million settlement. In death, Mark made his family rich. He died as an era of safer cars was dawning, cars that his own engineering expertise helped to bring into existence.
