For birth and death certificates, the California Secretary of State can issue an Apostille for the signatures of: county clerks and their deputies, county recorders and their deputies, and; the State Registrar (California Department of Public Health).
30 Μαρ 2023 · The Secretary of State’s office verifies the signatures and seals of public officials on documents such as birth certificates, marriage licenses, court orders, and more. Once authenticated, these documents can be used internationally, providing peace of mind that they will be recognized abroad.
24 Σεπ 2024 · To obtain an apostille in California, first have your document certified by an appropriate authority (e.g., a notary public or county clerk). Then, complete the Apostille request form from the California Secretary of State’s website and submit it with the certified document and a $20 processing fee.
How to get an apostille and when you need one. If the country where you want to use your document is on the 1961 Hague Convention member list, you will need an apostille. Documents such as vital records issued by a U.S. state will need an apostille from that state's secretary of state.
The Secretary of State grants four-year notary public commissions to qualified persons, approves notary public education courses, authorizes notary seal manufacturers, investigates violations of notary public law and takes disciplinary action, and issues apostilles.
