Before getting married in Chicago or suburban Cook County, couples must obtain a marriage license from the Cook County Clerk's office. Eligibility. Under Illinois law, only eligible persons can marry. Both partners must: be 18 years of age or older. not be blood relatives. not already be legally married to someone else or each other . Exceptions.
The 8 counties in the greater Chicago area are Cook, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry, Will, and DeKalb. General Information: In Illinois, you must obtain a marriage license (or civil union registration) no more than 60 days, and no less than 24 hours, before your marriage.
A valid marriage or civil union license and a $10 (cash only) administrative fee are required. There is no Cook County Clerk's office at the Third Municipal Courthouse. Marriage and civil union licenses may be obtained at the Cook County Clerk's offices at courthouses in Skokie, Maywood or downtown.
