Mass is given in Gev/c 2 , which is a Giga-Electron-Volts divided by the speed of light squared. Electon-Volts is a measure of energy, and is the energy gained by an electron crossing a potential of one volt. 1eV = 1.6 x 10 -19 joules. Mass is measured in terms of energy because they are equivalent according to Einstein's equation E = mc 2.
The characteristic expected signature of the Higgs boson decay to muons is a small excess of events in the invariant mass of muon pairs near the Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV. Figure 1: The Higgs boson candidate invariant mass distribution for the weighted sum of all event categories.
The muon’s mass is obtained from the muon-electron mass ratio as deter-mined from the measurement of Zeeman transition frequencies in muonium (μ+ e− atom). Since the electron’s mass is most accurately known in u, the muon’s mass is also most accurately known in u.
mass of around 125 GeV and the measured value of the muon g− 2, we consider a variety of phenomenological constraints, and present the benchmark particle mass spectra which can be explored at the LHC Run-2 in the near future.
A fundamental subatomic particle that is 207 times heavier than an electron. Muons have a mass of 0.106 GeV/c^2, where c is the speed of light, and are negatively charged. The muon is one of six known types of leptons. Muons are unstable; they decay to produce a virtual W-boson and a muon neutrino.
The mean energy of muons at sea level is still 4 GeV. Therefore the mean energy at creation is probably about 6 GeV. The atmosphere is so tenuous at higher altitudes that even at 15,000 m it is still only 175 g/cm 2 deep.
Muons have a mass of 105.66 MeV/ c2, which is approximately 206.768 2827(46)[6] times that of the electron, me. There is also a third lepton, the tau, approximately 17 times heavier than the muon. Due to their greater mass, muons accelerate slower than electrons in electromagnetic fields, and emit less bremsstrahlung (deceleration radiation).
