11 Οκτ 2024 · Materialism, in philosophy, the view that all facts are causally dependent upon physical processes, or even reducible to them. The word materialism has been used in modern times to refer to mechanical materialism, the theory that the world consists entirely of material objects.
Materialism, as an approach to understanding cultural systems, is defined by three key principles, cultural materialism, cultural evolution, and cultural ecology, and can be traced back at least to the early economists, Karl Marx and Frederick Engels (see Principal Concepts).
Materialism influences individual behavior by driving people to prioritize the acquisition of possessions over experiences or relationships. This focus on tangible wealth can lead to competition among peers for status symbols, reinforcing societal values that equate success with material goods.
