The primary function of an engineering material is to withstand applied loading without breaking and without exhibiting excessive deflection. The major classifications of engineering materials include metals, polymers, ceramics, and composites.
The engineering design process begins by defining a problem and completing background research on the problem. Requirements are specified and a solution is chosen. A prototype of the solution is built and then tested. If the solution built meets the requirements then the results can be shared.
To make it more clear, we consider an example, let the best possible production method is selected, under given conditions, it is die casting, obviously, now the choice of the material becomes limited, i.e. one can only choose materials with lower melting points, e.g. aluminium, zinc, magnesium and thermoplastics. Introduction to Engineering Design is a practical, straightforward workbook designed to systematize the often messy process of designing solutions to open-ended problems.
