Tumor markers for breast cancer can be found in the blood and are checked using a blood test. A high level of a tumor marker can mean that cancer is in the body, but is not enough to diagnose cancer. There could be other reasons for a high level.

They also may be able to predict who will have a late recurrence (a recurrence five or more years after the diagnosis).
The Nottingham score and histologic grade are used to determine if radiation is used after surgery (lumpectomy or mastectomy). A high-grade (grade III) tumor is seen as a higher risk for recurrence and having radiation therapy reduces this risk.
