Clinton Wahlen. Matthew 6, in the heart of the Sermon on the Mount, contains some of Jesus’ most practical teachings. It begins by focusing on true worship, which is deeply personal, and it includes instruction on giving to the needy, prayer, and fasting (Matt 6:1–18).
1) Practice our righteousness towards God, not towards people. a) Give to the poor for the sake of being seen by God, not by people. b) Pray to the Father to be seen by Him, not by people, and glorify the Father who is the Most Holy. c) Fast to be seen by the Father, not by people.
Verses 25-34 are less clearly divisible, combining to stress the single point that we need not (indeed, must not) worry about physical provisions, because God cares enough for us to supply those needs if our priorities are correct. Verse 25 gives the basic command in three areas-provisions of food, drink and clothing.
