Snorkeling Mauna Kea Beach takes place next to the rocky points at either end of the beach, so walk to the end you intend to snorkel. Then, you will have an easy, sandy, gradually sloping entrance into the water. Walk out into the water barefoot and slip your fins on when you can float.

Since 2011, one thing we always do when we come is to book an excursion with Manua Lani Sea Adventures for either whale watching or snorkeling/whale watching. This trip we did two trips snorkeling/whale watching but our true interest is to see the whales up close so you can hear them.
As you can see from my pics, this beach fits all the requirements for a dream Hawaii beach: long white sand, it is shallow for quite a distance into the ocean, a beach bar is readily available, and it has snorkeling.
