Prior to 1995, the national bird of the Philippines is “Maya”, particularly referring to the Chest-nut/Black-headed munia Lonchura atricapilla (Vieillot, 1807) or the mayang pula or mayang bukid.
17 Μαρ 2018 · The maya “impostor” is the Eurasian tree sparrow (Passer montanus), and the Wild Bird Club of the Philippines has deemed it “the most abundant and visible bird” in Metro Manila. In its blog , the club explains that the Eurasian Tree Sparrow was successfully introduced to the country.
The humble little Maya is more deserving to be the national bird than the lofty Philippine Eagle, or more familiar as the Monkey-Eating Eagle (Pithecophaga jefferyi), the current National Bird of The Philippines.
