How to calculate the Dosage of Medicines in Pediatrics. To calculate the Pediatric Dose of a drug, the Weight in Kg or the Body Surface can be used. However, the most used method is based on Weight in Kg. In this article I will explain you step by step how to do it.
Most drugs in children are dosed according to body weight (mg/kg) or body surface area (BSA) (mg/m 2). Care must be taken to properly convert body weight from pounds to kilograms (1 kg = 2.2 lb) before calculating doses based on body weight.
General guidelines for amoxicillin dosage for children 1 month – 18 years are: 15 - 30mg/kg, to a maximum of 1,000mg; three times daily. In case of strep A dosing – dosing depends on child’s body weight: Under 15 kg – 50 mg/kg, once daily for 10 days; 15- 29.9 kg – 750 mg, once daily for 10 days; 30 kg or over – 1,000 mg, once daily for 10 days.
