The Vital Role of Research in Improving Education WHAT IS RESEARCH? The American Educational Research Association (AERA) defines education research in part as “the scientific field of study that examines education and learning processes and the human attributes, interactions, organizations, and institutions that shape educational outcomes.”
Educational research is widely assumed to be essentially empirical, consisting mainly of collecting and analysing data, with randomised controlled trials as the ‘gold standard’.
Chapter 1 provides an introduction to both education and research, before analysing what is meant by ‘educational research’. The various features for each chapter are introduced with an explanation as to why they have been included.

In this essay, we propose an alternative, ontological conceptualization of relevance, arguing that more is at stake than outcomes and impact.
Educational research should have three objectives: to explore issues and find answers to questions (for academics), to share policy (e.g. relationships between education/work/training, for policy makers) and to improve practice (for practitioners).
