My plan was to create a series of cast aluminium moulds suitable for the injection moulding of recycled HDPE plastic made from shredded milk bottle lids. Unfortunately this only partially worked but the process will be explored below.
Do you ever want to make multiples of a favorite model, like model car parts, or change something from a foam/clay design to a plastic component? These can all be done by resin casting, which is to make a mold of the desired item and then pour plastic resin into that mold.
Making plastic molds requires designing the mold, selecting the appropriate material, building the mold, injecting the material into the mold cavity using an injection molding machine, cooling and ejecting the molded part, and finishing and inspecting the final product for quality.
1. Get the right mold material: The first thing you need to have for creating a plastic part is a mold. The mold is a female replica of your original part. You need to create your mold with a material called RTV (Room Temperature Vulcanizing) slicone rubber.
Some plastics can be cast by pouring a liquid resin with hardener into a mold (see “ DIY Rotocaster,” Make: Volume 41). Vacuum forming works well for making things out of thin sheets of plastic (see “ Kitchen Floor Vacuum Former,” Make: Volume 11).
