This guide covers only silicone part production, which produces soft, rubbery parts by printing directly with SIlicone 40A Resin, or casting silicone in 3D-printed molds. More information on rigid part production using silicone mold making can be found in our guide.
Vacuum casting is a manufacturing process similar to injection molding where urethane resin is cast in a cavity between two silicone mold halves. The process replicates a master model by pouring a silicone mold around it.
Watch how a medical training model is cast in resin. The process starts with a highly detailed 3D print, which is coated and smoothed with XTC-3D epoxy. Then a Smooth-Sil 936 platinum silicone block mold is poured, capturing every detail with virtually no shrinkage.
