Mefenamic acid is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to treat mild to moderate pain. It may also be used to treat menstrual cramps and other conditions as determined by your doctor. This medicine is available only with your doctor's prescription.

NSAIDs have been associated with an increased risk of potentially fatal thrombotic events including myocardial infarction and stroke [BMJ 2011;342:c7086]. Until further evidence is available use NSAIDs with caution in patients with pre-existing cardiovascular disease (except low-dose ASA).
Use of NSAIDs, including mefenamic acid, at about 30 weeks gestation or later in pregnancy increases risk of premature closure of the fetal ductus arteriosus.
Mefenamic acid, an anthranilic acid derivative, is a member of the fenamate group of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It exhibits anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antipyretic activities. Similar to other NSAIDs, mefenamic acid inhibits prostaglandin synthetase.
