Alopecia is the loss or absence of hair on the body where hair is normally present. Hair growth in the dog follows the hair cycle, namely anagen (growing phase), catagen (intermediate phase) and telogen (resting phase).
If a dog has hair loss and is also scratching the area excessively, the itching should be investigated first. There are many causes of hair loss, which can be congenital (the animal is born with the condition) or acquired.
