What treatment is needed for meningitis in newborns? If your baby has bacterial meningitis, they will need treatment in hospital. If they are seriously unwell, they may need to be cared for in a neonatal high dependency unit (HDU) or a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).
Treatment at home. Normally, your child will be able to go home if their meningitis is mild and if it’s viral. This is because viral meningitis usually improves on its own in seven to 10 days and tends not to cause serious problems (NHS, 2019).
