Research in cognitive linguistics over the past three decades has contributed much to our understanding of processes of meaning construction, and to the role mappings between different domains play in the imaginative resources manifested through metaphor and metonymy.
The goal of using such metaphor is either (a) to describe and help us understand the music-theoretic system more clearly (musical metaphor in the absolute sense), or (b) to describe and help us understand events from the external world inspired by music (referential musical metaphor).

This study extends the limited literature on the application of metaphors within advanced music instruction, providing new insights into the nature and function of metaphor in the way that music is perceived, performed and taught.
