In this chapter it is argued, for both historical and conceptual reasons, that the metaphysics of science is concerned with the very metaphysical preconditions of science. Scientific disciplines are characterized, at least in part, by their aim to provide novel predictions and to offer explanations for new facts and anomalies.

Grounded in empirical examples we present and examine four claims fleshing out this ecological perspective on cognition and metaphor, 1) metaphor is a product of an organism-environment-system – rather than merely a product of an inner mental process, 2) metaphoric meaning is relational.
