Meteors, and meteorites are often called “shooting stars” - bright lights streaking across the sky. But we call the same objects by different names, depending on where they are located.
“Shooting stars,” or meteors, are bits of interplanetary material falling through Earth’s atmosphere and heated to incandescence by friction. These objects are called meteoroids as they are hur-tling through space, becoming meteors for the few seconds they streak across the sky and create glowing trails.
When meteoroids enter Earth’s atmosphere, or that of another planet, at high speed and burn up, they’re called meteors. When you see lots if meteors, you’re watching a meteor shower. When a meteoroid survives its trip through the atmosphere and hits the ground, it’s called a meteorite.
The WMO International Cloud Atlas is the reference for the classification of clouds and meteorological meteors. It provides the definitions and descriptions of cloud types and meteors, and flow charts to help identify them.
METEORS: Meteors are better known as "shooting stars": startling streaks of light that suddenly appear in the sky when a dust particle from outer space evaporates high in the Earth's atmosphere. We call the light phenomenon in the atmosphere a "meteor", while the dust particle is called a "meteoroid".
