1 Φεβ 2009 · Metformin is an insulin sensitizer widely used for the treatment of patients affected by type 2 diabetes mellitus. Because many women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) are insulin resistant, metformin was introduced in clinical practice to treat these patients also.
Significantly more women with PCOS by updated guidelines should be taking metformin than women with PCOS by previous guidelines. Using the old guidelines 12% of patients should be taking metformin which increased to 91% using the new guidelines (p<0.0001).
