In this context, we intro-duce a recent Italian study by Zanetti et al1 on pregnancy outcomes after therapeutic use of MTX in women with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). MTX is on the WHO list of essential medi-cines.

Methotrexate was used to induce abortions and is currently used to treat ectopic pregnancies (pregnancies that grow outside the uterus). Some brand names for methotrexate are: Otrexup®, Trexall®, Rheumatrex®, and Rasuvo®.
15 Μαρ 2023 · RA women treated with MTX at any time before conception showed significantly higher risks of pregnancy losses than non-RA women (OR (95% CI) 2.22 (1.40 to 3.45)).
1 Οκτ 1999 · Table 5 summarizes the largest prospective study of pregnancy outcome in women on MTX prior to conception. 40 It is also the only study where low-dose MTX was used within 1 year of pregnancy. A high rate of spontaneous abortion is seen (as mentioned above), but there were no abnormalities of surviving fetuses.
