Metronidazole is a nitroimidazole antibiotic effective in eliminating anaerobic bacterial infections and some protozoal parasitic infections like Giardia, Entamoeba, Balantidium, and Trichomonas. It is available as Flagyl and Metrogel and is also sold as a generic. The medication is bactericidal.
