3 Αυγ 2021 · Begin in Houston’s historic East End where graffiti culture transformed into public art. At 5900 Canal St., you’ll find one of our most famed pieces, The Rebirth of Our Nationality. It was recently restored by GONZO247, supervised by the original artist Leo Tanguma who created the mural in 1973.
The city’s long-standing mural tradition dates back to the 1940s when Mexican American artists began painting colorful scenes from their cultural heritage. Murals have since become a staple of Houston’s urban landscape, with over 300 large-scale pieces adorning the walls of downtown streets and residential neighborhoods.
The East End Houston Cultural District boasts one of the largest collections of outdoor murals in the city of Houston and is home to more than 30 arts and culture institutions, artist studios, showrooms and design and fabrication shops.
