An essential reference document for all V8 enthusiasts covering the engine, fuel system, cooling system, clutch, gearbox and overdrive, propeller shaft, final drive, steering, front suspension, rear suspension, brakes, wheels, tyres, and electrical equipment, together with general information and weights. Do make sure you have the Issue 2 updates.
The 1500 and 1600 type gearboxes (and some early MK-II units) use the 10-spline input shaft. Later MK-II units (and early MGB) use the 23 spline input shaft. The input shafts are interchangeable (up to and including 1967 model year) if you use the matching clutch disc.
Look at third gear and second gear, on the main shaft immediately behind the input gear (and aft of the 3-4 sliding hub assembly). Grab these gears and try to move them around. There should be little or no motion other than normal rotation.
With the gearbox on the workbench, clean, degrease, wash and dry the outside before disassembly. When you open the gearbox, there are some specific things to look for. You can do a ten minute inspection to determine if the gearbox is in serviceable condition, or if it may need to be disassembled to replace some parts.
