3 Μαΐ 2016 · You have to take the transmission apart to replace the drive gear, and you have to remove the engine and tranny as a unit. You should consider doing what I did: I replaced the Smith's speedometer with a GPS unit from Speedhut.

1 Δεκ 2015 · Overdrive Speedometer Gear Replacement. I've bought a Blue label side fill overdrive gearbox to install into my 74 chrome bumper car. The box has 1000 TPM speedometer drive gears (red/red) installed and I have the 1280 gears (blue/white) on order.
The spiral shown on the shaft of the pinion is a scroll-type seal which is designed to push oil that gets onto the shaft back into the gearbox, although only when the car is moving forwards of course. Currently available pinions do not have the scroll.
4 Ιαν 2016 · Speedometer drive gear (on the mainshaft) is red. Speedometer driven gear (on removable drive housing) is red with 20 teeth. OD operates in 4th gear only in units made from February 1977 onward. Along the way the factory not only changed the transmissions, they also changed the speedometers.
29 Οκτ 2023 · It looks like there are different gears for different age of car so I think might be worth checking that some previous owner hasn’t changed the gearbox and or engine to a later or earlier version. Different drives and gears from different age of cars. Read the full article here ……
Only the speedo drive gear is different. The front gear cases are interchangeable (BTDT), given due consideration for the later layshaft diameter. This allows for bolt-in conversion to the larger 4-bearing layshaft. used from early 1967 (mid 1967 model year) through end of 1967 production model.
Top fill overdrives drive the speedo at 1280 turns per mile; side fill overdrives at 1000 tpm. A mismatch will cause the speedo to read incorrectly by 25%. Fitting an overdrive gearbox to an MGB requires a complete overdrive gearbox, a longer speedo cable, and the necessary gearbox wiring.
