MGM musicals are classics that started the era with talkies that later original songs and choreographed dances that were made for the films. They quickly became a sensation which expanded to other Hollywood studios, but Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's are arguably the best.
MGM also owned film studios, movie lots, movie theaters and technical production facilities. Its most prosperous era, from 1926 to 1959, was bracketed by two productions of Ben Hur. It divested itself of the Loews movie theater chain and, in 1956, expanded into television production.

The creation of MGM was orchestrated by Marcus Loew (1870–1927), who began building a chain of vaudeville and nickelodeon theaters in 1904 and 1905; by 1919, when it became Loew's, Incorporated, it was the leading chain of first-class theaters in the United States, concentrated in the New York area.
