Michael Robert Van Valkenburgh (born September 5, 1951) is an American landscape architect and educator. Michael R. Van Valkenburgh, Charles Eliot Emeritus Professor in Practice of Landscape Architecture, has taught at the GSD since 1982. He served as program director from 1987-89 and for a term as chairman of the department from 1991-96.
A professor and designer he is—the Eliot professor in practice of landscape architecture at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design (GSD), and probably the most celebrated landscape architect in America. But a hipster he isn’t and wouldn’t want to be. He is much too boyish and earnest for that.
