Using Boot Camp Assistant, you can install Windows 7 on your Intel-based Mac computer in its own partition. You’ll have a dual-boot system with your Mac OS on one partition and Windows on another. See the prerequisites below to see what you’ll need to do this.

I upgraded the Mac OS to Lion and then wanted to upgrade XP to Windows 7. I purchased the Windows 7 upgrade only to learn later that Boot Camp cannot upgrade from XP to Windows 7 - it requires either an upgrade from Vista (which I don't have) or a clean install of Windows 7.
Install Windows 7, put the OSX disk in, and rather than letting it autorun, open the disk manually and select setup. The compatibility checks Boot Camp seems to run appear to be bypassed this way.

Windows Migration Assistant 2.3.1.0 if your Mac is using macOS Big Sur.
