The Colonial Economy. By the late 17th century, the English had expanded their settlements along the Atlantic coast. Victory over the Dutch in the 1660s allowed the English to take control of the colony of New Netherland, which they renamed New York.
The Middle Colonies boasted a longer growing season than New England and a soil rich enough to grow cash crops. These were crops raised to be sold for money. Common cash crops included fruits, veg-etables, and, above all, grain. The Middle Colonies produced so much grain that people began calling them the “breadbasket” colonies.
Colonial America was an income per capita leader: Before the 20th century, the period during which Americans most clearly led Britain in purchasing power per capita was in the colonial era -- when the Americans were British.
Although marred by some serious technical deficiencies, focused disproportionately on New England, and seemingly unaware of the colonial economy and of the potential of economic theory as an explanatory tool, the recent literature has greatly expanded our knowledge of the population of early British America.
