The Restoration era provided some markedly new kinds of opportunities for settlement in the New World, and the mid-Atlantic colonies that emerged during that period filled a distinct niche within the developing British colonial system.
This chapter covers about 250 years (c. 1700–1865) of art made during a period of dramatic shifts and changes that reflect the cultural fluidity in the American colonies (and later, the United States).
