Though the general grade range for middle school is 6-8, variations exist, often due to regional educational policies and school structure. State-specific variations of middle school grade range include formats like grades 5-9 in California, Nebraska, and New York, and grades 7-9 in Indiana, Oklahoma, and Arkansas.
K-12 students in most areas have a choice between free tax-funded public schools, or privately-funded private schools. Public school systems are supported by a combination of local, state, and federal government funding.

While there is no comprehensive way to measure what public schools are the best in the nation, a few surveys look at data, including high school graduation rates and college readiness, to determine which states have the best schools.
Generally, there are three stages: elementary school (grades K/1–2/3/4/5/6), intermediate school (3/4–5/6), middle school / junior high school (grades 5/6/7–8/9), and high school / senior high school (grades 9/10–12).
